Event 3 "Staring in the Age of Destruction"

Project Iron by Tobias Heinemann

The Broad Art center was presenting a event called “Staring in the Age of Destruction – S.A.D” which was showcasing both visual and interactive forms of art. One standout artist from the exhibit was Tobias Heinemann. Heinemann showcased “An interactive exploration of the spaces and images evoked by sketches drawn by the artist over the course of several months” The artist drew everything and vectored this through the computer so that it could be input into a program that can render and establish parameters for the game to be based off of. This was interactive in the form of a game that acted on a multiple layered environment. The 2D game was influenced by the classic games such as Mario and Metroid.
The game requires the user to navigate their way through the 2D world that the artist has rendered. The way that the user can navigate through the world is by hoping between the three layers that the artist has created and utilizing the different set of barriers that have been established to collect items and explore the world presented. Heinemann helped me understand exactly what he was trying to do with this example and he hopes to make this project into something that could be streamlined to platforms.
I really enjoyed Heinemann’s project and could definitely see myself playing something like that in the future, he assured me that this would be something he would continue to develop and someday hopefully we will all see this game on a major platform!

Week 9 Space + Art

Space has been something that I have been very interested in since I was a child, I remember going to museums and reading books about the amazing race to the moon. Art and science are so closely related when you go beneath the surface. Like on campus the two are on polar opposites of campus and yet they are still connected. The accomplishments of NASA and even the individuals that made such amazing journeys happen like Armstrong help paved the way to technological advancements that would propel not only the technological race but also art.
One of my favorite movies is Contact with Jodie Foster and is just one of the many examples that correlate space and art. The openness and vast beauty of space is something that we can only hope to fully experience, the ability for humans to experience all of space is most likely impossible but the ways in which we journey through the vast unexplored space is something in itself. With the various planets and systems, to the smallest part of the materials in space made up of atoms and molecules, these various pieces come together to create something that we could not imagine ourselves. To explore these beautiful things humans have worked together to push the boundaries of what we will be able to experience with opportunities that companies like NASA and SpaceX
have helped provide to the whole world. The race to break through our own atmosphere and travel to the moon was something in itself and was a race that showed the accomplishments of amazing minds made up of artists and scientists utilizing the tools that art and science can provide for space exploration to be made possible.
