Week 6 BioTech + Art

I do believe that life in itself is an expressive medium that needs to be pushed and explored.
The artistic technique of transgenics, mutilation, mutation recombinance or selective breeding is a way of creating something new, something that would not happen under normal circumstances. These artistic techniques can help shape the art community and are some of the foundational methods for biotechnology practices.

I believe that the restrictions that are being proposed on scientists and industrialist should be a general restriction that is held to the responsibility of artists as well. The medium of this form of art is something that should be explored and pushed but should always be combined with restraint when needed. The limits that are being pushed onto the artists that are creating and manipulating living organism and semi-living systems should be universal. But this does not mean the creativity of this art form should be halted, but should be pursued in efforts that will not put something in harms way or bring about something that is hurtfully unnatural.
Walt Disney actually took part in this art form when he engineered certain plants and flowers to grow only to be a certain height. Along with his engineering of only edible plants within his land of Tomorrowland located in Anaheim, California. Disney wanted to take advantage of this Horticulture sciences while executing perfectly the creativity and inspiration of showing that plants can be art and help create something that would push technology and art forward. Ultimately the limits of human creativity should be explored, there is so much that has yet to be explored, but with this push forward I do believe that there should be the use of some restraint.

  1. I think that your example about Disneyland is really interesting. It has been debated for a really long time that Disneyland is a simulation and an imaginary version of America. The example of how the flowers are genetically modified almost proves that in a way Disneyland is artificial. Personally, it feels strange living in a world where we get so much joy out of places that are partially manufactured

  2. I love the overall appearance of your blog! I agree with your opinion of how these new creations are innovating biotechnology practices. Without these techniques, we would be limiting the exploration between art and science. It's so great that you related this week's blog topic to Disneyland. I had no idea that the plants were edible in Tomorrowland. I also was not aware that Walt Disney was so ahead of his time in engineering plants to contain certain characteristics. There definitely should be a balance between exploration and restraint, which you do an excellent job of analyzing. I hope to see more fun facts about Disney in your other blogs too!

  3. Thank you for enlightening your readers about the plants at Disneyland! I had no idea Walt Disney wanted to control the design of the theme park all the day down to its plants, and it's interesting how technology can be used to contribute to the overall aesthetic of the environment. I really enjoyed reading your blog post!
